Black Wolf, “Romeo”, Alaska – Image 2550

Black Wolf, “Romeo”, Alaska – Image 2550

I have always shot film and started experimenting with digital in January 2007. This was my first shoot with my new digital Nikon D200. I wanted to see how well the digital would do balancing the white snow and black wolf. This wolf is a consistent visitor to the Mendenhall Glacier area in the winter and was nicknamed “Romeo” by Sherrie Jans. The digital system worked well and I finally switched to digital in May 2007. Semipalmated Plover, Alaska – Image 2549

On my strolls on the flats in front of the Mendenhall Glacier, I stumbled upon this little female around her nest. I shot from a prone position (lying flat on my belly) to give the viewer the bird-eye’s perspective and stayed only a very short time in order not to disturb her nesting duties. Pinesiskin, Alaska – Image 2548

I am still recovering for the holidays and sorry I am late with a new photo. This photo I shot in the backyard of my friend, Nick Jans. It was early spring with the buds just appearing and the flocks of birds were migrating through Juneau. Beside this pinesiskin, there were flocks of cross-bills. This photo is available as a print. Iceberg, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2546

Every year the Mendenhall Lake freezes providing a great surface for cross-country skiing and skating. If the Mendenhall Glacier calves late in the fall season, the icebergs get trapped in the ice making a wonderful landscape for recreationalists and for photographers. This image illustrates the month of December in my 2008 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 20-35 f/2.8 Nikkor (polarized), Film 35mm Velvia slide film-Mark Kelley

Eaglecrest Ski Area, Sundance, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2545

Eaglecrest Ski Area had a great season last year. There is a website that monitors ski snow bases around the world and ranks the ski areas with the deepest snow. Eaglecrest spent most of the winter with the deepest snow base in the world. Last year, Juneau broke its own record for snowfall with about 18 feet (approximately 6 meters) falling at the airport. I shot this photo on a deep powder day on Sundance. I hope for a repeat season with snow by the ton. This image illustrates the month ...
