Bald Eagle Conundrum, St Paul, Pribilofs, Alaska #3014

Bald Eagle Conundrum, St Paul, Pribilofs, Alaska #3014

Last week, while visiting St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs, I captured an image of a very strange eagle with a gray head and white tail feathers. The eagle showed up in the Pribilofs this spring. Eagles are not common in the Pribilof Islands, and this odd bird is confounding the island bird experts. When I left the local consensus was that the bird was some sort of hybrid bald eagle. I am interested to know what the larger birding community might think of this eagle. I saw the eagle just ...

Parakeet Auklet, St Paul – Pribilof Islands, Alaska #3013

A Parakeet Auklet hangs out on the seaside cliffs of St. Paul in the Pribilof Islands. The Pribilofs are a small group of islands hidden in the Bering Sea encompassing some 77 square miles. The three hour flight in a small double prop plane from Anchorage covers 770 miles. The Pribilofs are famous for their large populations of northern fur seals and cliffs full of nesting marine birds, including many exotic species. The Parakeet Auklet is found commonly in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Island, ...

Tufted Puffin, St Paul-Pribilof Islands, Alaska #3012

My wife Jan and I and just returned from a five-day stay on St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs. The bird life on this island lived up to all of my expectations. I was so close to this wild puffin and was able to take full frame headshots. The bird cliffs are really windy and I love the wind-blown tufts swirling around this puffin's head. Thank you for visiting. Have a great 4th of July. Sunset – Tee Harbor, Juneau, Alaska #3011

I am a sucker for sunsets, how about you? This image was shot from the exact same spot as the previous shot, image 3010. The light, the tide, and the use of a longer lens make for a similar, yet very different photo. Once I find a great location I keep going back again, and again, and again, always looking on how to improve on the previous shoots. There is a saying: “You are only as good as your last photo," and I am always striving to make my next shot better than any shot before.  I love ...

Sunset, Tee Harbor, Juneau, Alaska #3010

On Father’s Day I spent a peaceful evening with a friend on his porch watching the sunset while eating a delicious piece of homemade strawberry/rhubarb pie. I hope everyone had as wonderful a day as I did. Thank you for visiting. Enjoy - Camera: Nikon D800, Lens: Nikkor 24-120mm, Digital Capture, hand held ©Mark Kelley
Humpback Whale Breach, Juneau, Alaska #3009

Humpback Whale Breach, Juneau, Alaska #3009

What a Show!  A humpback whale breaches in front of an Allen Marine catamaran along the shores of Shelter Island.  I shot this photo from another Allen Marine cat on Tuesday evening. This single whale put on a show for quite a long while. We lost count of the breaches and fluke dives, and also saw tail lobbing and pectoral fin slapping.  Thank you Allen Marine for a great tour! Thank you for visiting, enjoy - Camera: Nikon D800, Lens: Nikkor 70-200mm, Digital Capture, hand held ©Mark Kelley
