On Wednesday(1-25-2012), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) ran a feature on Admiralty Island called "Fortress of the Bears" on "Nature". Check out "Nature" online to see the program. In support of this programming, I plan to post four weeks of brown bears images (third installment). These brown bears look like they are fighting, but in reality they are playing. When bears fight, the sounds can be very loud and extremely menacing. These two juvenile bears (two and three-year-olds) were ...

In support of this programming, I plan to post four weeks of brown bears images (second installment). Brown bears come in a range of colors from creamy light brown to almost black. Wandering through Pack Creek, this black-colored brown bear scatters flocks of birds while searching for a pink salmon meal. The ...

Wednesday night (1-25-2012) Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) will be running a feature on Admiralty Island called "Fortress of the Bears" on "Nature". Check your local listings for time. In support of this programming, I plan to post four weeks of brown bear images (first installment). Many people accuse me of never shooting in bad weather which is mostly true. This photo shows that even I sometimes photograph in miserable weather. I spent two days, last summer in and around Pack ...

I have been lucky lately with a lot of really fun publications including publications in Patagonia and the cover of the State of Alaska Vacation Planner. The Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau puts out an annual vacation planner and over the years I have had a number of covers for the bureau, but none recently. This image is of my friends, Cris and Jamie, kayaking on the Mendenhall Lake in front of the Mendenhall Glacier. We got a beautiful day this past September and quickly threw the ...

Cross-Country skiers ski under the shadow of the mountain peak called Split Thumb. During a beautiful day in late winter, a group of us helicoptered up to the ice field to spend the day cruising the meadows of virgin snow in this mountain heaven. I am lucky to live in Juneau and have the ice field only a short helicopter trip away. The Juneau Ice Field is the 5th largest ice field is the Western Hemisphere and is more than 1,500 square miles. Within this Rhode Island-sized ice mass ...

Eagle Beach is probably one of my favorite places in Alaska. I try tovisit the area at least once per month. It is an wonderful amalgam ofsandy beaches, pristine waters filled with whales and sea lions and amountain backdrop to die for. For several years our family friends, Pauland Tammi, rented the Boy Scout Lodge at New Years, and we all celebratedthe holiday out there. It is a several mile hike off the road to get tothe lodge. Weather permitting, the supplies were brought in by ...
