Two winters ago Juneau experienced an amazing show of northern lights in the beginning of March. After this particular shoot I knew I had a winner. Some years I struggle to find the right calendar cover image, but this image is a quintessential Juneau image and is featured on the cover of my 2017 Juneau calendar. It is also featured during the month of December, the perfect photo to celebrate the holidays. May you and yours have a happy and warm holiday season. Thank you for visiting - ...

Wikipedia lists the origin of the word “photography” as follows: φωτός (phōtos), genitive of φῶς (phōs), meaning "light" and γραφή (graphé), meaning the "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", thus together the words mean "drawing with light". The essential word is “light”. The evening backlighting shining through the multiple blows of these humpback whales makes this image work. This photo illustrates the month of November in my 2017 Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thank ...

I shot this cloudburst over Admiralty Island from an Allen Marine whale watching boat approaching the southern end of Shelter Island. In the photo business we call it God Light. Photographers live for this moment of brilliance. This image illustrates the month of July in my 2017 Juneau Calendar. I will be signing calendars at the Juneau Public Market this upcoming weekend. Enjoy the photo and Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for visiting. Camera: Nikon D800, Lens: Nikkor 70-200mm F/2.8, ISO ...

This is a special image. In my 35 years of photographing whales in Southeast Alaska, this is the first and only time I encountered a full “rainbow blow”. During the orca’s exhale, its entire blow turned into a rainbow. Humpback whales have much taller blows, and I have seen partial blows turn into rainbows but never an entire blow. It is a remarkable moment of light and timing and I feel very fortunate to have witnessed it. This image illustrates the month of November in my 2017 Juneau ...

Every other year I enjoy participating in the NANPA Showcase Photo Competition. It makes for a fun reason to join the bi-annual summit of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) which is an association of some 2,200 nature photographers. I am happy the image “Bald Eagle Fire”, shot in Adak, Alaska, made Best in Show. 369 Photographers submitted a total of 3350 images, and three Mark Kelley images made it in the top 20. I am very grateful that ten Mark Kelley images were ...

I am pleased that one of my images has been selected for Alaska Positive 2016. Congratulations to Juneau’s own Chris Miller for winning the Juror’s Choice Award. There were 248 submissions and the juror selected 35 photos from 28 photographers for the final show. Some of you may remember that it placed first in the Alaska Airlines Magazine annual photo contest this year. I call this photo “OMG Glacier Calve”: As the Johns Hopkins Glacier calves, a kayaker paddles away from the massive ...
