Linda Rosenthal plays the violin by Auke Lake at the University of Alaska Southeast campus. I shot this image a long time ago while on assignment for the Juneau Jazz and Classics which is an annual nine-day long music festival. There were two parts to this shoot. First, I shot the more traditional image you see here, and in the second shot we replaced her violin with a frozen king salmon. While she was bowing the frozen king salmon, it started to melt in the summer sun. The shoot had to ...

The Haines area natives used to mark the trading trails between the coast and the interior with tree carvings. A local Juneau carver, Rick Beasely, revived this Tlingit trail marking artform and created seven new tree carvings in Southeast Alaska. There are three tree carvings at the top of the Mt. Roberts Tram, this one along the Mendenhall River and two more in Bartlett Cove on the trails around the lodge in Glacier Bay National Park. The tree carvings do not kill the tree because they ...

The summer tourist season is in full swing and there is no better place to get an overall look the the hustle and bustle than from the top of the Tram on the side of Mt. Roberts at the 1,800 foot elevation level. From now to September 27th, Juneau will have daily cruise ship arrivals with Juneau hosting as many as six to seven large ship per day. In total, 38 different ships (both large and small) will visit Juneau in the summer of 2009 bringing close to one million passengers. Enjoy the ...

Brotherhood Park, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #2615 I am dreaming of summer. This image of bicyclers pedalling through the fireweed on the path at Brotherhood Park with the Mendenhall Glacier in the background is an August image. But for the past couple of weeks, Juneau has been bathed in sunshine and warm spring temperatures, and my mind is wandering to the future summer. The ice went out on Twin Lakes last Friday on April 24 and the snow finally released our driveway on the same ...

The cruise ship season has started in Alaska with the first ship arriving in Juneau on April 20 (not the ship featured in this image). The one lone ship was out of cycle with the rest of the fleet that starts arriving consistently in May. One of my most favorite places to find blue ice in Alaska is in Tracy Arm. This photo shows a small Cruise West ship in the icebergs of Tracy Arm. What makes this photo for me is the range of blue ice displayed from the big wall of almost white ice to ...

I always wonder why the sea lions like hauling out on the nagviational bouys. Getting up on the bouys is incredibly difficult, and they are always over crowded. What is great is that no matter what time of year, you can always find bouys packed with sea lions and their constant pushing, shoving, and bellowing are a delight for myself. This is my favorite sea lion loaded bouy because the photo includes the Eagle Glacier in the background. I shot this photo in the late afternoon from my ...
