The railroad is the most popular cruise ship shore excursion in all of Southeast Alaska. I shot this photo of the train from the Skagway/Whitehorse road with my 500mm lens. This photo illustrates the month of August in my 2006 Southeast Alaska calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 500mm f/4, Film 35mm Velvia slide film-Mark Kelley

With tides ranging as high as 20 to 24 feet, very large icebergs get stranded at low tides on the beach area in front of Reid Glacier. Only 10% of a floating iceberg shows above the waterline with the remaining 90% below the oceans surface. I shot my friend, Monte, photographing these bergs while working on my book on Glacier Bay National Park. This photo illustrates the month of June in my 2006 Southeast Alaska calendar and can be found in my book on Glacier Bay. Camera: Nikon F/5, ...

Two large adult killer whales or orcas swim up Lynn Canal just north of Juneau. Killer whales are really the largest member of the dolphin family and our the Apex predator of the ocean. In long-ago whaling days, whalers watched them kill whales and referred to them as "killer of whales." Over time the name got shortened to killer whales. This photo illustrates the month of May in my 2006 Southeast Alaska Calendar and can be found on page 48 on my book called Alaskas Watchable Whales. ...

On a beautiful August day in 2004, a kayaker paddles the Mendenhall Lake in Juneau, Alaska. This photo illustrates the month of September in my 2006 Southeast Alaska calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 80-200mm f/2.8 polarized, Film 35mm Velvia slide film-Mark Kelley

Girls go swimming Alaska style in a pond next to the Mendenhall Glacier. The pond is separated from the Mendenhall Lake which is very, very cold. On the hot days during the summer this pond is one of Juneaus hot spots for the beach crowd. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 35-75mm f/2.8 polarized, Film: 35mm Velvia 100 slide film.-Mark Kelley

A humpback whale flips its tail high above the water as it dives, and another whale exhales or blows as it surfaces. Whales are mammals and as a mammal they have to breath air. A humpback whale tail or fluke is about 15 feet from tip to tip or roughly the length of a VW bug. This photo illustrates the month of November in my 2006 Southeast Alaska Calendar and page 79 in my whale book. This photo is available as an art print. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 80-400mm f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor, Film:35mm ...
