I shot this brown bear from my kayak in Blue Moose Cove in Glacier Bay National Park while shooting my book on the park. My assistant and friend, Brian, was paddling while I was shooting. This bear was coming for us down the beach. Brian assured me the bear would not jump in the water after us and if he did we could out-paddle a swimming bear. Brian was right the bear came to the edge of water, stomped its feet and woofed at us but did not go swimming. Latter we followed this bear around ...

I photographed this scene after a week of below-zero temperatures. The water was over 50 degrees warmer than the air, creating the steam rising from the harbor while the extreme tidal action prevented the harbor from freezing over. The sunrise lit the steam, giving the scene its rich warm color. Salmonberries are my favorite trailside hiking snack. They are loaded with water and do not hold up well in a bucket when picked-so I eat as I go. I usually never set up a photo, but I noticed this green moss pad and stream at my feet while picking salmonberries. I knew the color splash of the berries across the green moss wrapped in flowing water would work well. The fields of fireweed around Juneau in mid-July to mid-August are stunning. Most people including myself shoot the fireweed in front of the Mendenhall Glacier at Brotherhood Bridge Park. I wanted to find a different location emphasizing Alaska lush green and tremendous mountain scenery. The air in Juneau is really blue on clear fall days after long periods of rain. On just such a day, I headed out to the glacier on an early morning photo quest to catch the blue-bird sky above the glacier. I had no idea I would find a mirror reflection. I shot this scene by the raft loading area on MendenhallLake. The 2009 Juneaus Calendar is my 20th anniversary issue and features a look back over the years of photos showcasing some of my favorites from the past 20 years. This photo first ...

The Sawmill Creek waterfall is a fairy-tale, childhood dream-like place. My friend, David Job, poses by the falls to give the viewer the sense of size of the scene. This image illustrates the month of May in my 2009 Juneau Alaska Calendar. I shot this image with a slow (long) shutter speed to let the falling water turn into a mist creating more of the dream-like state. The 2009 Juneaus Calendar is my 20th anniversary issue and features a look back over the years of photos showcasing ...
