King Crab, Underwater, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2262

King Crab, Underwater, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2262

King Crab crawls across the pebbly beach along Almaga Harbor. King crab season opens July 1 in the Juneau area. I caught this crab and decided to photograph it in the beautifully clear water along the beach. During the summer, I fish for king crabs with pots down to 300-400 feet. One would not expect to see a king crab along the shore as pictured here. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: Nikkor 35-75mm f/2.8 polarized, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia.-Mark Kelley

Humpback Whales, Stephens Passage, Alaska – Image 2259

A pair of humpback whales lunge feed through a school of herring. Humpbacks surround a school of fish with a net of bubbles blown out of their blow hole. Once the school of fish are corralled by the stream of bubbles, the whales swim up through the school with their mouths wide open and swallow as many fish as possible. Eagle Nest, Icy Strait, Alaska – Image 2257

An adult eagle watches over her two eaglets in a nest along the shore of Icy Strait. Most eaglets hatch during May and early June. This nest was built in a tree on a very steep hillside. By scrambling up the hillside, I was able to get camera level with the nest. Camera: Nikon F3, Lens: Nikkor 300mm F/4, Film: 35mm Fuji 50.-Mark Kelley
