Mt. Goats, Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2810

I had an interview in my office Last Wednesday with a reporter and photographer with the local newspaper, the Juneau Empire. It was a beautiful blue sky day, and I was stuck inside waiting for the interview. The interview ended at 1pm and there was still two and half hours of light left. The sun sets around 3:30pm this time of the year. I had to make one more business call to a friend in San Francisco I had promised to call. We got talking, and he told me that he had a business meeting, ...

Mendenhall Glacier, Thunder Mountain, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2809

Join me Friday, 1-11-2013, at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center for my fireside chat on "Juneau's Backyard: Wales, Bears and Wilderness" for two shows starting at 6:30pm and 8pm.Why, I live here! This image captures the breath of the Juneau area from the lights at the Mendenhall Glacier visitors center, to Thunder Mountain ridge shadowing the valley, and on to the lights of the airport and downtown Juneau. I shot this image from Spaulding Meadows. It took two years and five cross ...

Chilkat Mountains, Haines, Alaska – Image 2808

Haines has one of the most beautiful settings for any small town in the world. The combination of the ocean, the incredible mountain backdrop and the necklace of sparking lights strung along the waterfront takes your breath away. I shot this image in February while on assignment for an advertising agency that contracted me to do a winter tourism shoot. This was my first and only time I tried a digital technique called high dynamic range (HDR) that helps to expand the tonal range of an ...

Spaulding Meadows, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2807

Spaulding Meadows is my go-to place when the snow is fresh and the skies are clear. Once again, I return and keep returning to Spaulding meadows for more and more images. This evening image of the Juneau area is shot up in the upper reaches of Spaulding Meadows from Auke Mountain. It is the only place I know that gives such a sweep of the Juneau waterfront with the airport and valley in the foreground moving along the Mendenhall Flats to the downtown lights in the far distance. To get this ...

Eaglecrest Ski Area, Juneau,Alaska – Image 2806

Eaglecrest is a great ski area, and the views on the backside overlooking Admiralty Island are to die for. I never tire of trying to make images of this view. This is my son, Owen, doing the model work. Owen along with his older brother, Gabe, are great models and are amazingly competent in the wilds of Alaska. They are also competing to see who gets the most images in my calendars. Right now Gabe is ahead with two covers to his credit. This image illustrates the month of January in my ...

Spaulding Meadows, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2805

Spaulding Meadows is my go-to place when the snow is fresh and the sun is shining. I love our local ski area, Eaglecrest , but the ski resort was placed in such way as to preserve snow. In the depth of winter the area is in the shade. When the sun is out, I want to recreate in it all day,and Spaulding Meadows is the place to be. It helps that the mountain backdrops are to die for. This image illustrates the month of March in my 2013 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks ...
