The Hubbard glacier is the longest glacier in Alaska (over 70 miles long) and one of the most active. It is the go-to-spot to get images of a calving glacier. I spend four hours in front of the glacier last May, and had dozens of in-your-face ice events. It is hard to gain perspective but this glacier face is about 200 feet high (70 meters) and six miles long. It is a thrilling place to be. The half day spent in front of the glacier had to be one of my better days spent in Alaska in the ...

Yesterday, the 15th, Juneau hosted the first five-cruise ship day of the summer tourist season The first ship arrived on May 2 and from now on out its is solid cruise ships until the last one leaves on September 25. I shot this image from an Allen Marine Catamaran off-loading passengers onto the cruse ship by a gang plank after touring the ship's passengers around Tracy Arm. Being on the catamaran tied up to the cruise ship me allowed me use the curve of the bow as a compositional ...

As a photographer and business person, I try to support many different community groups either by cash donations or free use of photos. I have donated photos for inside and the covers of the Juneau Community Foundation annual report for the past several years. Its is a great group that gathers funds to help support many local projects. Their function is pretty hard to describe in a couple of sentences. Check them out at their website: www.juneaucf.org. Additionally, I will be the photo ...

Last week Lynn Schooler and myself presented a slide/lecture show to an standing room only crowd at the University of Alaska Southeast Alaska lecture hall on what we refer to as the lost coast. I had hiked this area twice, once in 1998 while shooting film for a book on Glacier Bay National Park, and again in 2011 while shooting digital images on a family trip. I had to dig through my slides to round out the show and came across this image that I had long ago forgotten about. Backpacking ...

It snowed in the mountains Tuesday night and last Sunday I spent the dayin the snow covered mountains with my wife and friends. The local skiarea is closed even though they still have mid-season snow coverage at thebase. In Juneau, we call it the second season when we hike for our runs. This image was shot of my son, Owen, skiing in an area locals refer to as theWedding Bowl. There was a good eight to ten inches of light snow sittingon top of a hard base. It was perfect conditions to ...

Lynn Schooler and I will be doing presentation on backpacking the "Lost Coast" between Lituya Bay and Dry Bay as a fundraiser for Southeast Alaska Land Trust at the UAS Egan Lecture Hall on Thursday, April 25 at 7pm. Hope to see you there. Additionally,I will be the photo leader on a week-long trip (August 30-September 6, 2013) through Southeast Alaska on board the 50-foot custom trawler "Delphinus" captained by my good friend, Ronn Patterson. The trip starts in Wrangell and ends up in ...
