I apologize for not posting any new images for the past month. We have been enjoying a long and well-deserved break. This past week has been gorgeous in Juneau and there were plenty of sunny days along with some big winds. Although Juneau is not a hot spot for surfing there is a dedicated cadre of surfs who surf Lena Beach when the Taku winds are blowing. While the waves were not large, the mountains in the Chilkat Range in the background more than make up for it. For pure scenic value, ...

Last August I conducted Camp Denali’s fall photography workshop. While on a bus with all the workshop attendees we came upon this northern hawk owl perched in a willow tree. Most of the photographers decided to shoot extremely tight shots. Sometimes wildlife photographers choose to feature that super tight shot that shows the animal but not the space it inhabits. I am trying more and more to back away and let the environment soak into the image and give the viewer a fuller picture. In this ...

Welcome to the New Year. Year after year I return to one of my favorite places in Alaska: Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness. I took this photo last year towards the end of May when eagles are hungry after a long Alaskan winter. Salmon have not yet returned from the ocean and the harbor seal pupping season has begun. This immature bald eagle sits on an iceberg in front of the Sawyer Glacier, a popular harbor seal pupping area. After the pups are born the hungry eagles come around to eat the ...

The clear ice of a frozen Mendenhall Lake gives us a mirror reflection of the face of Mendenhall Glacier. The people in this image are a bonus, serving as a reference point of just how big the glacier really is. I have only seen the ice this crystal clear a couple times in my forty plus years of photographing the Mendenhall Glacier. This photo is a favorite from the days when I was still using 35mmm color slides and illustrates the month of January in my 2017 Juneau, Alaska calendar. A ...

Photographing northern lights usually means a very long night with little sleep. This image was taken on just such a night of chasing ghost lights that never really amounted to anything. When I finally got home at four AM with nothing to show, I saw this faint glimmer of green in the north sky. I got back on the road and found this volcano of green northern lights erupting across the sky over the island at the Shrine of Saint Therese. The show lasted for about ten minutes and then it was ...

Untouched snowfields are a photographer's delight because they catch the light in the sky. The snow in this photo is picking up the colors of an outrageously beautiful sunrise. It is the light on the snow that makes this photo work. I captured this moment while winter camping in the John Muir cabin in Spaulding Meadows in Juneau, Alaska, back in the days when I was still using 35mm color slides. A timeless and perfect holiday image that illustrates the month of January in my 2017 Alaska ...
