Two summers ago, I won two competitive bids for shoots on tourism in Southeast Alaska
one for the summer and one for the winter. The shoots were for the Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA). It is an association that takes money from its members ( tourism operators across the state and cruise ship companies) and the State of Alaska. With this money ATIA plans and carries out the ad campaigns both in print and television for the State of Alaska. The State Vacation Planner is where ...

This two-page spread out of the Patagonia catalog "Bitter Cold" features my image of my son, Gabe, under the Mendenhall Glacier. This is my first image ever published in a Patagonia catalog. I use to submit photos regularly about 15 to 20 years ago but stopped when life with kids, family and business got too busy. They bought another photo of mine back then that was use as an ad in the Japanese market only so it never made a catalog. This catalog came out some time last week and boy did I ...

I have been shooting whales in Southeast Alaska for over 30 years. I consider that I have about 30 good whale photos. About five of those images reach the next level beyond being good and part of my signature portfolio collection. For me, this image reaches the plateau of a signature portfolio image. Lots of people talk about the time and patience needed to be a wildlife/nature photographer. One photo on average per year as a keeper demonstrates the patience it takes. Or maybe, I ...

Celebration is a biennial gathering of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian tribal members organized every two years by Sealaska Heritage Institute. Held in Juneau on the even years, the festival attracts thousands of participants for a four-day celebration of dance and culture in early June. It has become the largest cultural gathering of Southeast Alaska natives in the world. June 2012 will mark its 16th anniversary. I have shot the event on and off since its inception in 1982. In 2010, I ...

In October when most of Alaska is starting to freeze up, Southeast Alaska is still relatively warm by comparison. Again it rains a lot in the fall, but on the few good days, it is a good idea to hike into the mountains. This photo was taken on top of Harbor Mountain in Sitka looking into the middle of the island. I had been waiting up on top for the sunset and the approaching evening hoping to photograph northern lights from this vantage point. While watching the setting sun, I turned ...

Southeast Alaska is not known for great fall colors. It mostly rains, more like pours September thru October. Every once in a while, we might get an exceptional years and get treated to some good colors. But, if a southeastern just scoots over the border into Canada through Haines or Skagway you are guaranteed some great fall colors. This photo was taken just over the pass on the Klondike Highway heading out of Skagway about 35 miles. The best time of the year to get the maximum color ...
