Last week I spent a day in Tracy Arm onboard the Captain Cook. I love going to Tracy Arm in the early summer because the harbor seal pupping season starts in late May and goes into early July. There are literally hundreds of harbor seals giving birth on icebergs in the bay in front of the South Sawyer Glacier. Have you ever wondered what a pregnant seal looks like? Check out the distended lower belly on the light-colored harbor seal front and center on the iceberg. Not as obvious, but the ...

The first time I went to Tracy Arm was in 1979 and have gone back almost every year since. The Arm is famous for having the bluest icebergs in Alaska. Last week I spent a day in Tracy Arm on board the Captain Cook, one of the three boats that Adventure Bound runs to Tracy Arm. I thought I had seen a lot of really great blue ice but this iceberg is the best blue iceberg I have ever seen in my forty-plus years of shooting this fabulous place. I had a really wonderful one-day shoot. I plan to ...

Having second thoughts about entering an ice cave? This young woman from California literally got cold feet. Her family had previously visited this Mendenhall Glacier ice cave during a guided trip with Above and Beyond Alaska. They were so taken by the ice cave that they returned to see it again on their own several days later. The daughter was disappointed that the water had risen to flood the cave to about thigh-high in places. Undaunted, she took her shoes off and hung out under the ice ...

This past May was one of the rainiest Mays ever in Juneau. June has been a much more enjoyable month with a balanced mix of sun, clouds, and rain. The sunsets over the Chilkat Mountains and Lynn Canal have been fantastic this past week. I shot this image last Wednesday, June 9th. A black bear cub pauses to take a breather from its ravenous feeding of dandelions along Juneau’s road system. Each spring dandelions line the roadside, what Juneauites call “Out the Road,” starting around mile15. The yellow banquet, although invasive, provides a much-needed food source for the bears. My good friend and proud new owner of the Wrangell Sentinel, Larry Persily, chose my photo of two black bear cubs at Anan Creek as the cover of the newspaper’s 2021 Visitors Guide. Wrangell is the gateway community for most anyone wanting to see the bears at the Anan Creek Wildlife Observatory. The trip to Anan Creek is Wrangell’s most popular tourist attraction. Besides the cover photo, Larry used ten of my images to illustrate the inside pages of the annual guide. Thank you for visiting ...
