I shot this image in 1976 as a photojournalism student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). During my four years of undergraduate work at UAF, I would always skip the first week of school and head to Denali National Park for a week of shooting. Over the past 35 years, I have spent months in Denali but this is the one and only opportunity I have had to photograph a cow and calf moose in Wonder Lake with Denali (Mt. McKinley) as a backdrop. My upcoming children’s book features many ...

I have not published a new book since 2007 when “Alaska: A Photographic Excursion” came out. I have always wanted to do a kids book and started seriously thinking about it the last four or five years. I wanted the book to use my best photos of Alaska and be fun to read and look at. My go-to-guy for words is my buddy Nick Jans. His rhyming verses make you smile, and together we express our deep passion for Alaska in “Once Upon Alaska”. We hope it deserves a place on your coffee table ...

The February 2014 issue of Alaska Magazine features an eight-page photo layout of bear images I shot at Anan Wildlife Observatory, along with text by Nick Jans. I have been traveling to Anan Creek for the past five summers, spending as little as a day to sometimes a whole week at the time. Anan Creek supports one of the largest pink salmon runs in Alaska which in turn supports a bear population of some 50 black bears and 20 brown bears . Anan is one of the few streams in Alaska where one ...

I am deeply honored to be one of fifteen winners in the 2013 Windland Smith Rice International Awards Competition by Nature’s Best Photography, a quarterly magazine. The competition is one of the most prestigious nature photography contests in the United States and the world. More than 24,000 images from photographers from 50 countries were entered in the 2013 contest. This image taken in Yosemite National Park at Vernal Falls and that I call “Rainbowed” won the Outdoor Adventure Category ...

This is the view from my home on the top of Starr Hill. I think it is one of the beautiful views I can image of any city and am lucky to wake up every morning taking all of this in. This winter has been wet and warm at sea level. Eaglecrest, the local ski area, which up in the mountains is getting good coverage and skiing has been a lot of fun. The top has 135 inches (11 feet) of all natural snow and the base depth is at 35 inches (three feet) of all natural snow. Thank you for visiting. ...

Happy Holidays!
The night lights of Juneau stretch across the Coastal Mountains from the frozen Mendenhall Lake, pass under Thunder Mountain, and continue down Gastineau Channel. Camera body:D700, Lens: Nikkor 16-35mm, ISO 100, Digital Capture
