White Pass and Yukon Railroad cruises down from the White Pass on its way to Skagway, Alaska. I shot this photo from a helicopter. When I shoot from a helicopter, I take the door off for an unobstructed view of my subject. The photo illustrates the month of June in my Southeast Alaska 2004 Calendar. Dog Salmon, Gold Creek, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2331

As the tide goes out, Dog salmon struggle up the low water in Gold Creek. Juneau has a late fall run of dog or chum salmon that usually head up Steep Creek in the Mendenhall valley. The Mendenhall Glacier reflects in the Mendenhall River next to Brotherhood Park. Usually in Juneau, we only get one or two good days in October, except for this year which has been extraodinarily warm and dry. Shots like this have been easy to come by this autumn. Literally thousands of crab pots covering arces and arces of land are stored all along the Alaska Peninsula. Millions of pounds of snow and king crab are harvested in this area of Alaska. In fall plummage, a willow ptarmingan stands on the edge of the park road. It is the state bird. Its coloration provides excellent camouflage changing from brown in the summer to almost pure white in the winter. I have just returned from a shoot traveling across Alaska for National Georgraphic Adventure Magagine.I was in the arctic and saw some mukox. This photo was taken years ago.
