Eaglecrest Ski Area, East Bowl Traverse, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2041

Eaglecrest Ski Area, East Bowl Traverse, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2041

I shot this scene in the spring. The wind sculptured the snow packed trees on the traverse over to the East bowls. The photo was taken with a Nikon F/5 camera body and a Nikor 80-2000 F2/8 polarized zoom lens on Velvia film. This photo illustrates the month of March in my 2001 Juneau Calendar.-Mark Kelley

Wintery Evening, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2040

I shot this photo at that time of day after sunset but before the dark of the night. The top of Mt. Juneau is catching just some subtle color from the long past sunset. I shot this photo in later December or early January around 4:30 pm. The shot was taken with an Nikon F/3 camera body and a 35 to 70mm F/2.8 lens using Fuji 50 film. This photo is available as a 5x7 notecard. Thank you.-Mark Kelley

Mendenhall Lake Biker – Image 2039

I was out wandering around the Mendenhall Glacier and I came across Rey and Dave ice climbing the face of an iceberg frozen in the Mendenhall Lake. I discovered them at the end of the day and arranged for them to come back the next day for some shots. I did not expect them to show up on bikes. I could not believe my good fortune. One of the photos from the day's shoot ended up in Bicycling Magazine. I shot this photo with an Nikon F4 with a 20-35mm f/2.8 polarized zoom lens with ...

Cross-Country skiing, Split Thumb, Juneau Ice Field, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2038

It is still raining in Juneau today but this time of year turns my attention to winter and the hopes of snow. This photo was taken on the Juneau Ice Field by the distinctive mountain feature called Split Thumb. Split Thumb stands over 5,500 feet high. A bunch of friends helicoptered up to the Ice Fields and spent a spring day cross country skiing this breathing taking area. I shot this photo with a Nikon F/5 camera body and a polarized Nikor 80-200 F/2.8 lens using Velvia film. This ...
Kayakers and Whale – Image 2005

Kayakers and Whale – Image 2005

I spent four days with Alaska Discovery clients during their Icy Strait marine mammal trip. It rained the entire time. I spent my time under an umbrella in the small boat trying to line up kayakers and whale tails. I shot lots of film but had very few successes. I used a Nikon F4 with a 300mm f/4 lens and Velvia film pushed one-stop to ASA 100. This photo can be found in my book on Juneau, Alaska called Juneau Portrait II. Thank you.-Mark Kelley
