Celebration 2018, Juneau, Alaska #3061

Celebration 2018 ended last Saturday, June 9, and I would like to share one last image from this wonderful event. I shot this photo on Saturday during the annual panoramic portrait of celebrants, officially shot by my friend Brian Wallace. I focused in on the interesting sets of faces in the overall crowd. I am filled with awe by the beauty and strength represented in a proud peoples dressed in their amazing regalia. Please share this image.Thank you for visiting. Camera: Nikon D850, ...

Celebration 2018, Juneau, Alaska #3060

Terri-Lynn Williams–Davidson drums and sings for the “Rainbow Creek Dancers” in the Celebration 2018 Processional down Willoughby Street before entering Centennial Hall for the Grand Entrance. The fun of being a photojournalist is showing up at an event and having no idea what I will find among a bazillion possibilities. My focus is to wade through all of this chaos and find the one telling moment that defines the story - the pure joy of dancing, singing, and celebrating one’s culture. ...

Celebration 2018, Juneau, Alaska #3059

On Tuesday evening three canoes arrived at the Auke Village Recreation Area in Juneau, Alaska, from Haines, Alaska, marking the unofficial beginning to Celebration. The canoes were filled with Southeast Alaskan and Canadian paddlers dressed in regalia awaiting the traditional welcome ashore from the Aak’w Kwaan Tinglits leader, Rosa Miller. While two of the canoes came from Haines, the middle canoe came from Haines Junction in Canada. The canoes’ arrival is part of the biennial festival ...

Icebergs, Tracy Arm, Alaska #3058

I was cruising in Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness on an incredibly sunny day in early May with Alaskan Dream Cruises, aboard the Chichagof Dream, and found this interesting iceberg. I am not sure why but every once in a while icebergs will appear slightly green. My theory is that the strong backlighting on the thinning ice causes the unique color. In this photo I especially like the contrast of the different colors of glacier ice, from white to blue to green. Additionally, I love the ...

Little Norway Festival, Petersburg, Alaska #3057

Last week I was in Petersburg, Alaska to attend the 50th annual Little Norway Festival which celebrates the town's Norwegian heritage, Norway’s Constitution Day and U.S. Armed Forces Day. The annual parade, which started in 1958, features rowdy fur-clad Vikings and Valkyries. Photographing people during this festival reminded me of my fourteen years of working at daily newspapers, which is where I started my photography career. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting nature and wildlife, but I ...

Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #3056

A constant problem for photographers is access and opportunity to photograph hard-to-reach places and events. This problem is especially difficult in Alaska because of its remote nature. I really appreciate everyone that has helped me get to locations that make photos like this one possible for the last forty years. I shot this photo of purse seiners, the F/V Sakina and the F/V Christian, in front of the Mendenhall Glacier during a twenty-four hour king crab opening last November. Thank ...
