It snowed in the mountains Tuesday night and last Sunday I spent the dayin the snow covered mountains with my wife and friends. The local skiarea is closed even though they still have mid-season snow coverage at thebase. In Juneau, we call it the second season when we hike for our runs. This image was shot of my son, Owen, skiing in an area locals refer to as theWedding Bowl. There was a good eight to ten inches of light snow sittingon top of a hard base. It was perfect conditions to throw a rooster tail. The bonus was the lone ski pole sticking through the powderblast. The backlighting is the critical factor in making this photo workand popping the white rooster tail from background. Also, the low angel ofthe sun just above the mountain ridge line helps delineate the roostertail by creating a shadow separating the objects of visual interest fromeach other. Additionally, I will be the photo leader on a week-long trip(August 30-September 6, 2013) through Southeast Alaska on board the50-foot custom trawler “Delphinus” captained by my good friend, RonnPatterson. The trip starts in Wrangell and ends up in Ketchikan. The tripwill visit Anan Creek and travel through Misty Fjords.
