Hoary Marmot, Dundas Bay, Alaska – Image 2111

A hoary marmot (Marmota caligata) watches for danger from eagles, foxes, wolves or bears in Dundas Bay, Glacier Bay National Park. When alarmed, the hoary marmot makes a loud whistle. Marmots are relatives of the squirrel; their front paws are clawed for digging burrows for their winter hibernation. Marmots are social animals and live in family burrows in larger colonies. This photo appears on page 56 of my Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska book.-Mark Kelley
