Creek Street, Ketchikan, Alaska – Image 2383

Few sights in Southeast Alaska so delight the eye as Creek Street, built on pillings above Ketchikan Creek. The wooden boardwalk, rimmed now with galleries and shops, was the red light district of Ketchikan during the rowdier days when loggers and fisherman came to town looking for entertainment. The city closed the twenty-odd houses in 1953. Locals used to say that Creek Street was the place where, “both fish and fisherman went upstream to spawn.” This photo illustrates the month of September in my Southeast 2005 Calendar.
