Arctic terns are the long distance champions of the bird world. They live in perpetual summer and almost perpetualdaylight: living one summer in Antarctica and then migrating to Alaska to spend another summer in Arctic. I shot this photo from my kayak while working on a book about Glacier Bay National Park. Usually when I work from a kayak I like to be in a double and have an assistant along with me to help with the paddling and positioning. By myself, it always seems like I should be paddling when I am shooting or shooting when I am paddling. An assistant is a big assist. This photo can be found on page 74 in my book, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, which has sold over 70,000 copies.
