Hammer Slough, Petersburg, Alaska – Image 2740

Oct 1, 2013

Hammer Slough in Petersburg is the quintesstial Southeast Alaska waterfront. At low tide the slough goes dry, and at high tide the historic stilted buildings create a mirror reflection in the water as it creeps up and fills the slough. I had waited all day and into the early evening to shoot the reflection. I had everything perfect, and then I heard a skiff revving up. I was cursing my fate because this speedy little boat would ruin my reflection that I had waited all day for. I was shooting like mad as the skiff got closer and closer. As it came into view, I thought my image was going to be toast. Then, I noticed the skiff was really a gift and added a counterpoint to the more mundane and predictable image of just the reflection. That the driver turned up into the photo at the perfect place was more than I could have ever planned for or thought of. I got lucky once more. The image illustrates the month of September in my 2012 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
