The cover of my 2024 Alaska Calendar features a photo of the northern lights in the Brooks Range, located in the high Arctic along the Dalton Highway, shot at minus 30 Fahrenheit — damn cold. My Nikon D850 camera body has never failed me but it froze up this time after four hours in the cold. The LCD screen on the back of the camera read “ERROR.” I had never seen that before, but I had to agree — the shoot was over. I have been photographing the Aurora in Alaska for almost 50 years and had never seen this kind of rainbow of orange, yellow and green wrapped in a late night and moonless dark blue sky.
