Northern Lights, Auke Bay, Alaska #3075

Sep 26, 2018

Last Friday night I photographed the northern lights from Portland Island in Juneau, Alaska. I faced the mainland and my view included the Mendenhall Towers, Auke Bay, and Lena Cove. The light show started around 10 o’clock in the evening and it was still illuminating the night sky when I crawled into my tent exhausted around 4:45 in the morning. This particular aurora created an over-all green glow in the sky with no real defined edges. Such conditions do not really make for the best photo. During my seven-hour vigil the lights would coalesce into strong bands and shapes every once in a while. Waiting for these moments of clarity kept me up all night. Enjoy and thank you for visiting – Camera: Nikon D850, Lens: Nikkor 2470–400mm, Digital Capture, tripod ©Mark Kelley
