Purse seiners anchor in the Amalga Harbor area waiting for the annual chum salmon opening. The Douglas Island Pink & Chum (DIPAC) hatchery has a release site at Amalga Harbor. After the hatchery does their cost recovery fishery, DIPAC opens the area for a free-for-all purse seine fishery. The openings usually happen around the fourth of July but for the past three years the seine opening did not happen due to poor fish returns.
