Caribou, Alaska Range, Denali National Park, Alaska – Image 2508

A bull caribou eats its way along the tundra in Denali National Park. I was fighting the weather, mostly rain the entire week I was there in the summer of 2006. I had this incredible break in the weather over the Alaska Range with the dark storm clouds obscuring clear skies behind them. I shot this photo from as low of a position as possible trying to move the caribou silhouette up into the mountains. The brushy conditions prevented me from moving the animal any higher in the frame. This photo appears in my new book, Alaska: A Photographic Excursion, released recently. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 80-400mm f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor lens, Film 35mm Velvia slide film.-Mark Kelley
