Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2597

Clear weather, smooth ice and huge icebergs are magnets for the Sunday strolling crowd. I shot this photo from the front doors of Mendenhall Glacier visitor center. It was such a fabulous day that my wife and I counted over 150 cars parked in the two parking lots and the road leading to the visitor center. What interests me in this image is the color of the glacier. It really is this color. The summer glacier is never as rich in color as the winter glacier ice and I don’t understand why. Add in the late, low angle light of the winter sunset and the color becomes otherworldly. This image illustrates the month of March in my 2009 Juneau Alaska Calendar which is in its 20th year.Nikon F4, Lens: 500mm f/4 Nikkor, Fuji Velvia slide film-Mark Kelley
