Tree Carving, Brotherhood Park Trail, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2617

Oct 1, 2013

The Haines area natives used to mark the trading trails between the coast and the interior with tree carvings. A local Juneau carver, Rick Beasely, revived this Tlingit trail marking artform and created seven new tree carvings in Southeast Alaska. There are three tree carvings at the top of the Mt. Roberts Tram, this one along the Mendenhall River and two more in Bartlett Cove on the trails around the lodge in Glacier Bay National Park. The tree carvings do not kill the tree because they are carved only a small portion of the tree’s circumference. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
