Juneau Ice Field, Split Thumb, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2756

Cross-Country skiers ski under the shadow of the mountain peak called Split Thumb. During a beautiful day in late winter, a group of us helicoptered up to the ice field to spend the day cruising the meadows of virgin snow in this mountain heaven. I am lucky to live in Juneau and have the ice field only a short helicopter trip away. The Juneau Ice Field is the 5th largest ice field is the Western Hemisphere and is more than 1,500 square miles. Within this Rhode Island-sized ice mass there are 38 glaciers including the famous Mendenhall Glacier just 13 road miles from downtown Juneau. This photo illustrates the month of December in my 2012 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
