One of the best places in Alaska for whale watching is Juneau. The humpback whales return to the Juneau from the yearly migration to Hawaii sometime in April or May. Once here, they stay put for the summer. The whale activity concentrates around Shelter Island about 20 minutes by skiff from Auke Bay Harbor. About 85% of the photos taken in my whale book, “Alaska’s Watchable Whales: Humpback and Killer Whales” were shot circling Shelter Island. This summer we had five weeks of daily bubble-net feeding in and around Shelter Island. This silhouette image of tails, backs, and blows was shot at South Shelter and illustrates the month of April in my Juneau Alaska 2013 Calendar. Enjoy and the photo and thanks for visiting.
