Refuge Cove, Ketchikan, Alaska – Image 2789

Southeast Alaska is dotted with many small beautiful out-of-the-way boat harbors. The evening light and calm waters casting a mirror reflection makes this photo work. The dilapidated dock in the foreground leading into the central focus of the image really helps the composition. I had to wait a long time for this photo to develop. I found the location about three hours before the evening light, but I had to wait until bunch of kids stopped jumping off the dock creating waves that ruined the reflection. I thought that they would never stop. Considering the day I would not have blamed them for not stopping. With almost no light left for the shoot, they stopped and headed home. I had about ten minutes to get the shot before the sun dropped below the trees casting a shadow over the whole harbor. This image illustrates the month of May in my Southeast Alaska 2013 Calendar. Enjoy and the photo and thanks for visiting. Camera body: D700, Lens: Nikkor 20-200mm f/2.8 /digital capture/ISO 200© Mark Kelley
