Mendenhall Glacier, Thunder Mountain, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2809

Join me Friday, 1-11-2013, at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center for my fireside chat on “Juneau’s Backyard: Wales, Bears and Wilderness” for two shows starting at 6:30pm and 8pm.Why, I live here! This image captures the breath of the Juneau area from the lights at the Mendenhall Glacier visitors center, to Thunder Mountain ridge shadowing the valley, and on to the lights of the airport and downtown Juneau. I shot this image from Spaulding Meadows. It took two years and five cross country ski trips up to this area before I found the moon in the exact spot I wanted. If you have ever lived in Juneau, you understand you just don’t get that many clear full moon nights in a year. I love the photo because it shows isolated, tiny little Juneau as an oasis of light, warmth and civilization in the vast wilderness that surrounds it. It is this mixture of civilization and wilderness that make this place so special and home. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. © Mark Kelley
