I took this photo on Tuesday, 7-23-2013. This field of fireweed islocated on Egan Expressway next to Temsco Helicopters across the highwayfrom Fred Meyers. The view of this area is one of Juneau’s most stunningvistas. It is loved by all, the fireweed in the summer and the christmastree in the winter. But all this beauty might be gone in years to come.Bicknell, a local developer, has purchased this 82 arces and hopes to makea Comprehensive Plan Map G change that will ultimately make it easier tochange the property’s zoning making the area more amenable to commercialand industrial development. Bicknell lost the first round at theplanning commission but is appealing that decision to the Assembly. Ifhe ultimately prevails, we could possibly see the area turned into astrip mall or hundreds of other possibilities allowed under a zoningchange from rural development to industrial and general commercial. Thehearing in front of the Assembly is scheduled for November 4, 2013. Markthis date on your calendars. We need a packed room to demonstrate theimportance of this decision to the community. The Trip Is Full. I will beone of the two photo leaders on a week-long trip (August 20-August28,2013) through Southeast Alaska on board the 50-foot custom trawler”Delphinus” captained by my good friend, Ronn Patterson.
