Lynn Canal, Commercial Fishing – Image 2851

Dec 4, 2013

This is an older image I dug out of my slide files shot around 1981 when the Juneau area still had a commercial herring seine opening. Purse seiners anchor at South Bridget Cove next to Mab Island at mile 37 along the road north of Juneau which ends at mile 40 (Echo Cove). The purse siene fleet was in the area to fish a spring herring opening. The year after this photo was taken the Alaska Department of Fish and Game closed the fishery for good in the Juneau area because of low stocks. Historically, Juneau area enjoyed huge spring herring runs but as development moved in the herring stocks disappeared along with the fishing boats. Enjoy the image and thanks for visiting.
