One of my favorite trees in Juneau, Alaska, is this cottonwood starkly standing on Crow Point at Boy Scout Beach. This tree is the lone deciduous sentinel in a sea of a bazillion evergreens. The trail out to Crow Point follows along a beautiful sandy beach and is one of my favorite hikes in Juneau. Every time I come upon this tree, I wonder to myself: “how in the heck did this tree get here and grow so large without any supporting family or neighbors.” It is a testament to its strength and a mystery for me to ponder.
