Alaska, Dog Mushing, Juneau Icefield #3362

Oct 6, 2020

In the 1880’s Mark Twain was so awed by his first site of a glacier that he wrote, “A man who keeps company with glaciers comes to feel tolerably insignificant by and by.” In this image I was trying to visibly illustrate his comment depicting the insignificance of humans in the vastness of this other-worldly environment. I would like to thank Northstar Trekking for the helicopter ride to their dog camp on the upper reaches of the Taku Glacier in the Juneau Icefield during the summer of 2019. Today, October 6, would have marked the end of the 2020 cruise ship season in Juneau; the season never happened because of Covid-19. This was the first summer since I moved here 41 years ago that there were no ships in Juneau. I do look forward to the return of cruise ships in 2021, as many local businesses like mine depend on tourism. This photo illustrates the month of February in my Alaska 2021 calendar. My calendars can be purchased locally at Hearthside Books, Juneau Artist Gallery, Ben Franklin, Super Bear IGA and Foodland IGA, or at markkelley.com.
