Icebergs, Reid Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Southeast Alaska – Image 2428

With tides ranging as high as 20 to 24 feet, very large icebergs get stranded at low tides on the beach area in front of Reid Glacier. Only 10% of a floating iceberg shows above the waterline with the remaining 90% below the ocean’s surface. I shot my friend, Monte, photographing these bergs while working on my book on Glacier Bay National Park. This photo illustrates the month of June in my 2006 Southeast Alaska calendar and can be found in my book on Glacier Bay. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 polarized, Film 35mm Velvia slide film.-Mark Kelley
