Great Blue Heron, Steep Creek, Mendenhall Recreation Area, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2680

I love this photo because it doesn’t look like an image one would find in Alaska. The image looks like it should have been taken in the swamps of the Everglades. I actually shot this photo of the great blue heron in Steep Creek just a little over a mile from the face of the Mendenhall Glacier. I stayed one day in one spot monitoring the life moving through this scene for over 10 hours. Besides shooting this image, I shot next week’s image of a black bear fishing in almost the exact same spot as this heron. Even if it took ten hours, getting two calendar images in one day is a very good day. This image illustrates the month of May in my 2011 Juneau Alaska Calendars. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Camera body: Nikon D300, Lens: Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8, digital capture, ISO 200, hand held © Mark Kelley
