Last night under a full moon, the sky caught fire. For four hours, a symphony of blue and green spilled into the waters of the Inside Passage—a vivid reminder of why I’m so lucky to call Juneau home.

Everyone loves historic lighthouses. The Point Retreat Lighthouse at the north end of Admiralty Island, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Juneau, features an amazing backdrop of the Herbert Glacier with the snow-covered Coast Mountains. This image is the July image in my Juneau 2026 calendar. The calendar is available for purchase in Juneau-area stores and at markkelley.com. Have a wonderful holiday season. One of my favorite places to photograph wild Alaska is Tracy Arm Fjord. My first shoot in Tracy Arm happened in 1979 when I had just moved to Juneau to become the first photographer at the Juneau Empire newspaper. I took a day boat and spent most of the day in the fjord. I was amazed and over the top in disbelief at its beauty. I fell in love with the place and have gone back at least three times a season for the last fifty years, totaling some 150 trips. This image is of a mother harbor ...

Ketchikan is widely recognized as having the largest collection of standing totem poles in the world. The best place to see these totems is in the two outstanding outdoor totem parks: Saxman Totem Park and Totem Bight Historical Park. I usually find myself mostly alone in the parks, enjoying the peaceful space in the early mornings or late afternoons. But on this day, I was greeted by this group of kids and adults playing, running around and having a blast at Saxman Totem Park. This image ...

This is one of my favorite images of bears, and I have photographed a lot of bears. This image was shot in the early spring on Gloomy Knob in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Gloomy Knob is pretty much a steep barren rock wall falling into the ocean — meant for mountain goats, not bears. I am guessing the bears were hunting for a possible opportunity of catching a kid goat as a spring meal. What I love about this image is the contrast of the brown fur against the barren gray rock. I ...

Anan Wildlife Observatory is just a short boat ride out of Wrangell, Alaska. Anan Creek is one of my favorite spots to photograph black bears and coastal brown bears together. I was staying at the Anan cabin, which is a one-mile trail walk to the bear viewing platform run by the U.S. Forest Service. I was walking the trail by myself. When I got to the platform there was a juvenile bald eagle and baby black bear sharing a perch in a spruce tree. I was stunned — never in my wildest dream ...
