Humpback Whale and Seagull, Alaska – Image 2513

Oct 1, 2013

A seagull escapes the open mouth of a humpback whale lunge feeding on the backside of Douglas Island. Both these animals were feeding on the same prey, herring. This whale was with a number of other whales bubble-netting or cooperatively feeding. Often, circling seagulls overhead mark the spot were the whales will surface with their mouths open corralling as many herring as possible.
