Humpback whales range in length from 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) and weigh between 25 to 40 tons (22,680 to 36,280 kilograms).   The North Pacific supports a population of about 18,000 to 20,000 animals with 3,000 individuals spending the summer in Southeast Alaska.  Most of the Alaska humpbacks migrate to Hawaii in the winter and back to Alaska in the summer, a 6,000-mile round trip (10,000 kilometers).  A humpback tail or flukes can measure up to 15 feet (5 meters) from tip to tip.
