Sockeye Salmon, Steep Creek, Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska – Image 2536

Sockeye salmon hang out in Steep Creek at the Mendenhall Glacier. The 4,000 or so sockeye that swim up this small creek keep a population of almost ten black bears fed all summer long starting in mid-July. Sockeye salmon are the only salmon of the five species found in Alaska that turn bight red while transiting from saltwater to freshwater.
