Small Crusie Ship, Tracy Arm, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness – Image 2781

Tracy Arm is famous for its blue icebergs. Glacier ice is blue because of its dense crystalline structure created under huge pressure by the weight of hundreds if not thousands of feet of ice. This weight squeezes out all of the impurities and makes for ice many time denser than your ice cube in your drink. The crystalline structure of the ice absorbs all the visible light spectrum except blue. The blue light is refracted off the ice giving the glacier ice its signature blue color. As soon as the ice is exposed to the air the crystalline structure gets broken down…turning the ice to white. The best place in Alaska to see the deepest blue icebergs is Tracy Arm. This image can be found in my newly updated and redesigned Tracy Arm book, “Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness”. Enjoy and the photo and thanks for visiting.
