Iceberg, Mendenhall Lake, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2648

Several years ago the Mendenhall Glacier calved the largest icebergs that I had ever seen in the Mendenhall Lake during my 30 plus years of photographing the glacier. Having calved late in the season, the icebergs did not melt and ended up frozen in the lake. The ice-locked icebergs provided an unbelievable landscape and an usual recreational playground. One of the cross-country skiers is about 6 feet tall (about 2 meters) making the towering iceberg somewhere between 24 to 30 feet high (8-10 meters). Remember that 90% of the iceberg is below the surface. This photo illustrates the month of December in my Juneau Alaska 2010 calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
