Ice Skating, Mendenhall Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2752

This is my brother , Michael, skating across the Mendenhall Lake in front of the Mendenhall Glacier. He was visiting us at Christmas so the image was taken during the height of the winter darkness. This time of year the sun comes up around 9:30am and is getting dark by 3:30pm. During the day, the sun never gets very high in the sky and bumps along the horizon just above the mountain peaks. Although the daylight might not last too long what is there is the perfect photographer’s light…low in the sky and rich in saturation. It is the light photographers die for and at this time of the year we get it for almost six hours per day. The light and the long shadow cast by the setting sun makes this photo work. This photo illustrates the month of February in my 2012 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
