Until last year when Juneau built its first indoor rink, the only place to skate was on frozen lakes. The skater is my brother who was visiting from down south. He was a college hockey player and had really only skated in rinks. He found the freedom of racing across miles of unbroken ice without any boards exhilerating and exhausting.
