Ice Caves, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2693

The approaching winter starts freezing up the local environment, and the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier become relatively safer to explore. Exploring the ice caves along the edge of a moving glacier is dangerous and probably not a recommended recreation. But with that said, a lot of Juneauites go to the glacier to visit the caves. This photo is of my friend, Joe, checking out the frozen arch. Many folks also visit the ice caves in the summer but those summer-time caves are really wet and don’t have the added graphic element of hanging icicles. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. I will be leading a small boat photo cruise in Glacier Bay National Park next year with Dolphin Charters (www.dolphincharters.com), July 6-12, 2011. Come join me for a week cruise in the bay exploring Alaska. This photo illustrates the month of January in my Juneau Alaska 2011 calendar.© Mark Kelley
