Haines, Alaska – Image 2490

November to mid-December is the time of year, people head to Haines to photograph the annual migration of eagles to Haines. Every year thousands of bald eagles descend on Haines. As the rest of Alaska freezes up the eagles move south looking for open water and feed. The Chilkat River has a late salmon run. I try to photograph this wildlife happening as often as I can. The days are short, and the shooting light is good for only about 4 to 5 hours. I spend the rest of the time looking for interesting evening or predawn subjects. I shot this photo of Haines before the morning sunrise. This image illustrates the month of December in my 2007 Southeast Alaska calendar.
