Glacier Calving, Dawes Glacier, Endicott Arm, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness – Image 2782

WOW! Sometimes a photographer just gets lucky. I have shot a lot of calving glaciers but have never before got to include the human element to give the viewer a reference point on just how big everything is. This is the Dawes Glacier with a glacier face standing close to 200 feet above the water line. The small rubber raft and lone kayaker were off a Safari Cruise trip, and I was traveling on the “Adventure Bound” that does daily trips down to Tracy Arm out of Juneau. There was one sunny day last August and it happened to be the one trip to Dawes Glacier. Usually the “Adventure Bound” only does Tracy Arm but has three special sailings per summer down the Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier in the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness. I could not believe the raft and kayak was so close to the glacier, and I hoped for a safe calving event that would put the display in perspective. And it happened. And I got it. I don’t think anyone else got this photo because they were to busy shooting the calving which is totally understandable. But I had pulled back waiting and hoping for just such a moment. This image can be found in my 2013 Southeast Alaska Calendar illustrating the cover and the month of September and on the cover on my newly redesigned book on Tracy Arm. Enjoy and the photo and thanks for visiting. Camera body: D700, Lens: Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 /digital capture/ISO 200© Mark Kelley
