Fishing Bear, Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska – Image 2631

My favorite time of the year for bear viewing is the month of August in Juneau at the Mendenhall Glacier. The salmon have arrived in Steep Creek and historically up to a dozen or so black bears are there to welcome the returning salmon. Black bears live all over the world, but the only place I know where you can show these animals in a glacier environment is at Steep Creek in front of the Mendenhall Glacier. The icebergs collect in the lake downstream from the creek and as our former Chilean exchange student, Benjamin once said “Bears, salmon, glaciers, mountains – this is the Alaska of my dreams. It all right here.” This image illustrates the month of June in my 2010 June Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.Nikon F5, Nikor 80-400mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, polarized, Fuji Velvia 35mm film-Mark Kelley
